We are committed to supporting apprentices wherever we can. Read Archie’s story, our most recent apprentice, below.

Supporting Apprenticeships

Studying and getting paid f

Archie joined D1P as an apprentice and split his time between work and study. He spent one day each week focusing on his formal qualification, with the remaining four days gaining hands-on experience at work. Archie made clear the level of support he received:

“Once I was in, the company were great with me in terms of time management… I was supported by an excellent network.”

As part of a small business, Archie had direct access to our senior and management team. With decades of industry experience, they introduced him to best practice methods and how our company operates. He could approach senior leaders for advice on his development and career choices, while team members at his own level helped with practical tasks:

“People in senior leadership positions who were able to help me mould my skillset and support me as I established the direction I wished my career to go in, as well as others that were much closer to my level, and able to provide detailed support on tasks where required.”

This approach gave Archie practical skills and workplace knowledge, which he combined with his studies for career growth.

What did you do at Day 1 People?

Archie worked across sectors including Defence, Telecommunications (5G), Software, and Engineering & R&D through his experience at D1P. In each sector, Archie used and developed skills in specific areas offered by D1P, such as Project Management, Bid Management, Opportunity Identification, and Campaign Management.

“D1P gave me the opportunity to work under a variety of people, on a number of client projects”

Through close collaboration with project directors, bid managers, and technical consultants, Archie refined his professional approach and learned to adapt to different client needs. This wide exposure allowed him to handle both technical and commercial challenges on live projects. Archie played a hands-on role in project delivery and client-facing tasks, building directly on the service lines D1P provides.

His time as an apprentice gave him end-to-end project insight, from identifying new business, through campaign and bid delivery, to successful project management and close-out.

A Different Route

“I felt I would be much better suited to an environment where I could make a real-world difference, while continuing to learn and gain qualifications”

An apprenticeship provided Archie with a different route, and a chance to get stuck in to the real world of work and advance his career. The knowledge and connections he made have set him up for a successful path.

“Looking back now, this was absolutely the right decision.”

From Apprentice to Consultant

After completing his apprenticeship, Archie moved into a Delivery Manager role. He works directly with industry partners and civil servants. This role lets Archie continue his progress and apply his APM Associate Project Manager qualification. He now manages project delivery and coordinates across teams to achieve targets.
